As I predicted he should, Sen. Richard Durbin apologized to the US Senate, to the American people, to our servicemen, and to any he may have offended, including those who thought he was demeaning the Holocaust.
I may not agree with much Mr. Durbin stands for, but I must say he had enough character to admit that he was wrong (albeit with much pressure, but still he admitted it.) Not so with other prominent democrats, but Dick Durbin today won back a large portion of the respect I lost for him on June 14th.
A quote at the end of this article by an aide to Bill Frist reminds us there is still work ahead for Dick Durbin.

Durbin may have apologized for offending those who misinterpreted him, and for offending/slurring our military, but he did not apologize for saying that our soldiers are torturing people at Gitmo.
They are NOT torturing anybody according to the definition of torture you provided. Our soldiers do not get as good of treatment as these detainees are getting with respect to meals, living conditions, and accomodations. To say that they are being tortured is really far fetched. In addition, this "email" that Durbin got has never surfaced and I would like to examine it so we know what it did specifically say, who put it out and to whom it was addressed.
Durbin and the democratic machine are still putting out anti-Bush propaganda in order to forcibly take back the power they lost in previous elections. They can't win elections, so they will trash their opponents in their left-friendly media in order to get the desired result. The problem they are experiencing is that most Americans aren't buying it, and the negative trash-talking is only digging them in deeper. VP, you may be succinct and to the point, but so far you haven't been wrong. Others may bash you, but I think you've been right on the money the whole time.
What about the other prison article on the page saying that the boys from Halliburton are going to get another $30 million to build 200 bed plus prison in Cuba?
When will Bush say he made a mistake over WMDs?
Not until his friends make a lot more$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
Dear TT:
I think you've watched "Fahrenheit 911" just a few too many times.
Halliburton? You mean the company that the US government has been employing for the past 20+years to do jobs such as the one you are describing? The same company that Clinton asked to go into Kosovo? Yes, I've heard of them. I'm sure they are buddies with Bush just as much as they were buddies with Clinton (for 8 years! Bush has only been in the White house 4!)
And that is *telling the truth.*
I wnat to know where these lefties get this made up crap. Next thing you know they'll be saying Condeleeza Rice is a rogue member of the skin heads.
What a load!
You called it right about the apology, but do you consider it adequate or even complete? He's sorry for hurting your feelings, not about whatever politically partisan demon that he was being influenced by when he orginally wrote the comments, made the comments in the U.S. Senate, then standing by them.
This was a good, carefully crafted political apology, which actually is the subject of another post to come.
I never thought that Mayor Daley of Chicago and I would agree on much (is he a Cub fan?) but in this article, he said very succinctly what his opinion of Senator Durbin was with respect to his "Nazi" reference.
I think when Durbin heard that Mayor Daley was dissing him, he knew that his political future was in grave danger. *NOW* I know where the tears came from.
I still think it hard to believe that Dick Durbin is getting away with his so-called "apology."
A friend tipped me off to a couple of stories in the Chicago Tribune about the Cook County Jail. It seems there have been sexual assaults by a guard on inmates, and other guards were trafficking drugs in and out of the jail.
Seems to me that Dick Durbin might want to look closer to home before he starts calling other prisons "gulags."
Here's a link I thought you all would enjoy:
Campaign Button?
Looks like Durbin's campaign funds payed off with a letter of support from his well financed Auditor Amy Stockwell.
???
The kid on the "Campaign Button" link looks like he has taken a page from the Dick Cheney School of Public Discourse.
