The A.N.S.W.E.R. - backed "protests" are a vote-pandering move by the far far far far far left to get more people on their side, and now Dean, who follows after some of these idiots, is attempting to clear the way for illegals to vote. (or so it seems.)
No, HEEEYaaaah, you don't have to stand on your head and gargle peanut-butter, nor do you have to recite the past 30 World Series winners in order to prove you can vote. You should show some I.D. though, for cryin' out loud!

The only reason the DNC/Howard Dean are against showing ID is because the notion originated as a republican idea. It's the party of "NO" as VP is keen to say. Plain and simple.
In most cases, that is enough for them to obstruct.
I think it is much more sinister than that. Showing an ID is simply the best way to combat the main avenue of vote fraud the Democrat Party has honed and perfected over the years. Of course they are going to resist having their most reliable fraud tool taken from the arsenal.
