True Patriotism From 30 Years Ago Today

I was in grade-school at the time, and to be honest, I do not remember this at all. I vaguely remember Jose Cardenal playing left field for the Cubs in the late '70s, but that's about it.

On April 25, 1976 in Dodger's Stadium, Chicago Cub center fielder (and now LA Dodgers announcer) Rick Monday "rescued" an American Flag that had been doused with lighter fluid and was going to be set on fire by some "protestors." (I have no idea what they were protesting.)

The above picture was taken by a photographer at the game. See STORY.

Veteran Dodger announcer Vin Scully was on the air when this happened. Go to the website and listen to Scully call the action.

The picture of the Dodger scoreboard that said, "Rick Monday....You Made A Great Play" was outstanding. (See the "photo gallery.)

LR's Thought For The Day: There are multiple ways of protest that Americans can utilize. Burning our flag should not be one of them. Think of something more practical rather than inflammatory (and risky....Tommy Lasorda might threaten to punch you out.)

P.S. Cubs Win!
